Football coach

Ambitious, meticulous, determined - Alexander Kiene's path to professional sport

Alexander Kiene is a teacher of sport, English and French and was a lecturer at the Sports Institute at the University of Hildesheim. After his studies and the second state examination, he began his path to becoming a football coach when he obtained the DFB C licence in 2004, the B licence in 2007 and finally the A licence in 2009. In 2018/19, he completed the DFB football instructor training programme with top marks (very good / 1.3).

Development as a coach

Alexander Kiene has been actively involved in training young players since 2004, starting at the DFB training centre. His coaching journey has taken him from the 6th to the fourth division (Landesliga to Regionalliga) in Germany to the second Austrian Bundesliga. Regular internships at traditional German clubs such as Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen and Hannover 96 as well as abroad at clubs such as FC Barnsley, Vitesse Arnhem and KAS Eupen are part of his ongoing development.

Alexander Kiene's idea of the game is based on an offensive and attractive guiding principle that anchors five attributes in the individual phases of the game: intensity, activity, aggressiveness, courage and dynamism. Active, courageous play has always fascinated Alexander Kiene more than simply waiting to see what the opponent does. His team should play with a high level of willingness, passion and emotion.

The concept of the game is characterised by several building blocks. Kiene pushes a forward-oriented attack from a compact position, emphasising very active and aggressive pressing. He also emphasises bold and purposeful ball possession, which prepares the game in depth. In offence, the aim is to repeatedly create moments of speed and finish off determined play. Dynamic switching processes should contribute to this attacking style of play. The individual building blocks shape his strategy, which should lead to success through a good balance between defence and offence as well as flexible playing systems.
